At the age of four she began to sing and was soon able earn some recognition when she asked her mom for permission to send her to Sesame Street auditions. At the age of six she began her acting career as a child actor on the Sesame street's educational television program. She was a part of numerous Broadway shows in New York City, including Fences (with James Earl Jones and later Billy Dee Williams) and Orfeo del Campo (off-Broadway). At the age of seven, she appeared in Star Search and won twice getting a four-star score after appearing two times.
